ch.4 english translation

speaking of classification freaks, we shall intersect our readings.

"Secular Defilement", a chapter from the book "Purity and Danger", by Mary Douglas has settled my mind. Douglas claims that the concepts like "clean" and "dirty" are socially constructed. The classification system defined by social norms and structures, decides what is clean and what is filthy. Hygene is a justification to this detailed classification, brought to us by modernism. Something "out of its place" is associated with dirt and garbage. The classifications of the religion works like this too. According to the Hindus, the cooked food is contagiously dirty, whereas raw food is cleaner; it stays clean even though it passed from the hands of a member of the lower caste. We, on the other hand; find raw food dirty and wash it over and over again; sometimes even boil it until it's dead again.

Baumann explained the same situation in his article about "strangers". Those who we put in the category of strangers are the ones who we know about, but the ones that are not one of us; they are in the grey zone. They are strangers because we know them enough to classify them. They disturb us because they manifest the delicacy of the borders and the fictitiousness of our identities. (at least, they disturb the fascists.)

(It was also mentioned that Hrant Dink was seen as a threat because he was neither from us nor from them.)

All these intersect with an article in Cogito. Taner Ay slotted some views on the movie "Night Porter", one of which is Gerard Duponts, who sums everything up perfectly:

"Himmler was an agrarian married to a nurse. It must be understood that the concentration camps are the product of the fantasies of a chicken farmer and a nurse. Hospital plus chicken coop: The ghost behind the concentration camps. Millions were killed there, this is not to invalidate the charges against those responsible of the holocaust, on the contrary I want to purify them of the charm of the erotic values that is to be attributed to the concentration camps.

NAzis were,by the worst meaning of the word, housewives. They runned around with brooms in their hands, trying to purify the society of dirt, impurity, everything they found filthy: of Jews, homosexuals, mentally ills,non-aryans,blacks. (...)"

Let's think of all the classifications we make in a day. Thinking about Nazis afterwards is unpleasant, yes. Hygene, massacre and housewives ,side by side, yes, very unpleasant to think.
Think about it.
